Austin, Gurganious Double-Doubles Lead UCR To 74-57 Win Over UC Irvine
2/17/2010 9:26:35 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Riverside 74, UC Irvine 57 Box Score
Kyle Austin (16 points, 14 rebounds) and Larry Gurganious (12 and 13) recorded double-doubles Wednesday evening and the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team never trailed in picking up a 74-57 Big West Conference win over visiting UC Irvine.
The win moves the Highlanders into a tie with the Anteaters for eighth place in the conference at 4-9. The top eight teams in the Big West advance to the conference tournament in Anaheim in mid-March, and UCR now owns the tiebreaker over UCI having beaten them twice this season.
Both teams have three games remaining in conference play, with UC Riverside playing all three on the road and UCI playing two of three away from home. Before they can finish out the conference season, however, the Highlanders must first host Youngstown State this Saturday at 6 pm as part of the ESPN BracketBuster.
The Highlanders scored the first nine points of the game against UC Irvine and although the Anteaters did manage to tie the game at 17 with 7:25 to go in the first half, UCR went on another late run to take a seven point lead into the locker room 32-25.
It was Brandon Dowdy and Jesse LoBue leading the Highlanders offensive in the first with Dowdy nailing four of eight from the field for nine points and LoBue making two of three three-pointers in the period for six points. Austin, who led UC Riverside with 74 points over the past two games, scored just three points in the first 20 minutes of play.
A Bryson Hampton jumper with 2:55 gone in the second gave the Highlanders their first double-digit lead of the night at 40-30, and the Anteaters never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Austin scored 13 points after the break including 9 of 13 from the free throw line as UCR was 21 of 28 from the charity stripe in the second half.
The Highlanders dominated the glass outrebounding UCI 47-31 and committed just seven turnovers. Eric Wise led the Anteaters with 22 points on eight of 17 shooting and Darren Moore added 10 points for UC Irvine.
