UC Riverside 62, Youngstown State 60 Box Score
The UC Riverside Men's Basketball program honored its six seniors prior to the start of the team's Saturday evening ESPN BracketBuster game against Youngstown State, but it was sophomore David Chavarria whose stick back with 0.3 seconds remaining gave the Highlanders a 62-60 win. (Listen to John Ramey's call of the final play)
UCR led by as many as 11 in the second half and was still up by seven, 56-49, with 4:19 to go, but Kelvin Bright and DeAndre Mays scored the next five points of the game to cut the lead to two. It was still a two-point game with 1:30 to go and the Highlanders controlling the ball looking to add to their advantage. However, UC Riverside missed two shots and committed at turnover over their next three possessions while Vytas Sulskis was draining a jumper for the Penguins to tie the game at 60 with 24 seconds to go.
The Highlanders called a time out with 13 seconds left on the clock to set up their final play, looking to avoid their third overtime game of the season. Youngstown State defended the play well causing Lateef McMullan to drive towards the basket and put up an errant shot, but Chavarria was there to grab the rebound. Falling backwards, he tossed the ball towards the hoop and it dropped in with 0.3 seconds remiaining on the clock. The Penguins inbound pass on the next play was tipped and sailed out of bounds giving the Highlanders the win.
Chavarria scored seven points in the game, all in the final 5:48 while Kyle Austin led UCR with 13 points on the night. Brandon Dowdy chipped in with 11 points and Larry Gurganious added 10, while Sean Cunningham handed out a career-high nine assists. The Highlanders are now 5-0 in BracketBuster games.
UC Riverside has three Big West Conference games remaining on its 2010 schedule and is currently tied for eighth place with UC Irvine. UCR owns the tiebreaker over the Anteaters, however, having beaten them twice in the regular season. The Highlanders take to the road for two games next week where they will face Pacific on February 25 at 7:30 pm and UC Davis on February 28 at 1 pm.
