UC Riverside 6, Bethune-Cookman 1 Box Score
UC Riverside freshman Trevor Frank (1-0) pitched six shutout innings in his first-ever start for the Highlanders as UCR upended visiting Bethune-Cookman, 6-1, at the Riverside Sports Complex Monday afternoon. Ryan Goetz (pictured) scored two runs and Robert Brantly knocked in a pair to help Frank to his first win as a collegian and the Highlanders to their fourth win in as many games to open the 2010 season.
The Highlanders took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second aided by three Wildcat errors and three balks by Bethune-Cookman starter Roman Lancara (0-1). Ryan Goetz opened the inning with a grounder to short that Alejandro Sanchez couldn't handle, and moved to second on Lancara's first balk. Robert Brantly followed wth an RBI double and advanced to third when rightfielder Matt Wright had difficulty getting the ball back into the infield.
Justin Shults reached on another error by Sanchez that scored Brantly, and he moved up 90 feet on Lancara's second balk. Two batters later Bryan Horst hit a sharp single to second that bounced off of the tip of Jairo Acevedo's glove and Trevor Hairgrove's sac fly made it 3-0 UC Riverside.
Catcher Dan Pellegrino added to the UCR lead as he led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to left, while in the fifth Robert Brantly lifted a sacrifice fly to right which scored Joey Gonzales and Goetz scampered home all the way from second base when Lancara uncorked a wild pitch that eluded Wildcats catcher Peter O'Brien.
Meanwhile, Frank was mowing down Bethune-Cookman batters at a healthy clip allowing just two hits through four innings and five hits through six. Head Coach Doug Smith went to the bullpen for the seventh, eight and ninth innings as Tommy Mackoul retired the side in order in the seventh, Mitch Patito allowed just one hit while striking out three in the eighth, and Mark Garcia gave up one hit and an unearned run in the ninth.
The Highlanders travel to San Diego State on Tuesday for a 6 pm PT first pitch. They then play a unique four-game series with Loyola Marymount in which games one and four are played at LMU on Friday, February 26 at 2 pm and Sunday, February 28 at 1 pm, and games two and three are played as a double header at the Riverside Sports Complex beginning at noon on February 27.
