UC Riverside vs. Bethune-Cookman Game Notes
The UC Riverside Baseball Team, coming off of a three-game sweep of visiting BYU over the weekend, returns to the Riverside Sports Complex Monday afternoon for a 3 pm PT first pitch against Bethune-Cookman. Fans who can't make it out to the yard can listen to the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, broadcast the call right here at gohighlanders.com
The Wildcats opened their 2010 season by participating in the Major League Baseball Urban Classic in Compton, CA. They dropped the opener on Friday to Cal State Northridge by an 18-4 score, lost to UCLA on Saturday, 10-3, and picked up their first win of the year on Sunday, 13-8, vs. Southern.
On the hill this afternoon for UC Riverside will be freshman right-hander Trevor Frank, making his first start as a collegian. Bethune-Cookman counters with junior lefty Ramon Lancara. It is Lancara's first start of the year after making two starts and 20 relief appearances a season ago. He picked up one save and posted an earned run average of 7.18 on the year.
The Highlanders won all three of their games over the weekend against BYU largely thanks to their offense and some timely relief pitching. UCR hit .376 as a team with an on base percentage of .449 and a slugging percentage of .560 in the series. Seven members of the team are hitting over .350 on the year.
Derek Speigner threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to help the Highlanders come back to take a 12-11 win over BYU in the first game of the series, and Donovan Gonzales pitched 4.0 innings out of the pen on Saturday allowing two hits and just one run as UCR closed out the series with an 11-6 victory.
