Box Score - UC Riverside 18, UNLV 10
Las Vegas, NV - The UC Riverside baseball team won its fifth straight game after a 18-10 victory on Tuesday evening at UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Highlanders improve to 21-13 while the Rebels fall to 21-19.
Justin Shults went 5-of-6 including hitting three home runs to propel the Highlanders to a season-high in runs.
His three home runs ties the all-time school record and ranks first in the Division I history of the program for most home runs in a single game. The last Highlanders player to hit three home runs in one game was Patrick Ojeil, who turned the trick in 1998 against Southern Utah.
Shults' five hits also ties the Division I record for most hits in a game and is tied for fourth all-time in school history in that category.
UC Riverside scored in seven of the nine innings to tally 18 runs, the most runs they've scored since they plated 22 at UNLV on May 5, 2009.
Six different players had at least two hits led by Shults' five, while four athletes had three or more RBI. Every batter for the Highlanders garnered a hit en route to a season-high 19 hits.
Trevor Frank got the start for UCR on the mound and pitched four innings, giving up five runs while striking out two.
Mike Wolford came in to pitch in the fifth and ended up earning the win for the Highlanders. He struck out two while allowing two runs to score.
Billy Wardell was saddled with the loss for UNLV, lasting just 0.1 innings and giving up three runs.
The Highlanders return to Big West Conference action with a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara beginning on Friday, Apr. 30 in Santa Barbara, CA.
