Gauchos Defeat Highlanders 5-1 To Open Three-Game League Series

Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside baseball team had it's season-best five-game winning streak snapped on Friday afternoon after a 5-1 loss at UC Santa Barbara in Big West Conference action. The Highlanders fall to 21-14 overall and 5-5 in league play while the Gauchos improve to 19-17, 5-5.
After erupting for a season-high 18 runs in their last outing, the Highlanders bats were held at bay for most of the game as they plated just one run on seven hits. Dan Pellegrino led UCR with two of those hits while five other players had one apiece.
The beginning of the game was very much a pitcher's duel as there was just a combined three hits through the first three innings of play.
UCSB got on board by plating two runs off UCR starter Matt Andriese in the bottom of the fourth inning as a Ryan Tregoning single and an error by the Highlanders right fielder brought home two runs.
Santa Barbara continued its scoring two innings later as they opened up a 5-0 advantage after bringing home three in the sixth.
The Highlanders got one run back in the top of the eighth as a Brian McConkey single scored Trevor Hairgrove from second base after he laced a double to the right side.
UC Riverside threated in the ninth inning as they had runners at second and third with two outs, but a ground out ended the game, giving UCSB the 5-1 victory.
Andriese took the loss for the Highlanders, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing five runs, four of them earned.
The Highlanders continue the three-game series with the Gauchos on Saturday, May 1 with a 1:00 pm start in Santa Barbara, CA.
