Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside baseball team evened its Big West series at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon with a 9-2 victory at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, improving to 22-14 overall and 6-5 in league play.
Dustin Emmons got the win for the Highlanders and gave up just four hits and two runs in 7.0 innings of work. The Gauchos (19-18, 5-6) scored both their runs off Emmons in the fourth inning, but had nothing going the rest of the way.
UC Riverside got on board early with a solo run in the first inning as Michael Hur's RBI single scored Brian McConkey from third base.
The Highlanders continued pounding out the hits by scoring four runs in the second off an RBI single by Joey Gonzales, a 2-RBI single by Robert Brantly, and a sac fly by Justin Shults. The team added another run in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
UCSB scored two in the fourth to cut the margin to 6-2, but UCR responded with a two-out rally to score three runs in the top of the fifth to push its lead out to 9-2.
Trevor Frank pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Mike Wolford pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win for UC Riverside.
Gonzales led the Highlanders offensively by going 3-of-4 with two runs and two RBI.
The rubber match between these teams is slated for 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 2 in Santa Barbara, CA.
