Baseball One Game Out Of Second Following Win Over UC Santa Barbara

UC Riverside 10, UC Santa Barbara 3 Box Score
Santa Barbara—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to break open a one-run game and cruise to a 10-3 win over host UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Highlanders to 23-14 on the year and 7-5 in Big West Conference play just one game behind second place UC Irvine.
Leading 2-1 heading into the fourth, the Highlanders put Bryan Horst on third base with one out as the second baseman singled to center, moved to second on a sac bunt and took third on a wild pitch. Brian McConkey brought Horst home for UCR's third run of the day with a sac fly to left.
With two outs, the next five Highlanders reached base to give UC Riverside an 8-2 lead. Joey Gonzales got the rally started with a single to center and promptly stole second. Michael Hur followed with a single to center scoring Gonzales, and Robert Brantly's single to center put runners at first and second.
Justin Shults drilled a double to center plating Hur and Brantly, and Tony Nix blasted his third home run of the season over the left field wall to cap the scoring. Shults finished the day with one hit in four at bats, dropping his batting average four points to .385 as he continues his quest for .400.
Highlanders starter Matt Larkins (5-2) held UC Santa Barbara in check scattering eight hits over seven innings allowing single runs in the third, fourth and fifth. Mitch Patitio pitched the final two innings for UC Riverside allowing just one hit while striking out four.
The Highlanders added to their lead in the top of the eighth as they loaded the bases on a single and two hit batsmen. Hur singled to right to score one run, and Brantly reached on a fielder's choice driving in another to make it 10-3 UCR.
Jesse Meaux (6-3) took the loss for the Gauchos as the Highlanders touched him for 12 hits and eight earned runs over four innings.
The Highlanders eight-game road swing continues this Tuesday with a 3 pm PT first pitch at San Diego.
