UC Riverside at #22 San Diego Game Notes
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team's eight-game road trip continues Tuesday at No. 22 San Diego (26-16), and concludes this weekend with a three-game Big West Conference series at No. 10 Cal State Fullerton (27-14, 12-3). First pitch Tuesday is slated for 3 pm PT as Trevor Frank (2-1, 7.13) climbs the hill for the Highlanders (23-14, 7-5) who have won seven of their last eight decisions.
UC Riverside's weekend rotation will consist of Matt Andriese (4-3, 4.68), Dustin Emmons (6-3, 3.00) and Matt Larkins (5-2, 4.30). The Highlanders took two of three over the weekend at UC Santa Barbara to climb within one game of second place UC Irvine (27-14, 8-4).
Tuesday marks the second meeting between the Highlanders and Toreros this season with San Diego taking a 15-8 decision in the first game on March 23. The teams were scheduled to play on April 20, but the game was postponed due to rain. No make up date has been announced yet for that game.
The Toreros have won nine of their last 10 games and 12 of their last 14. Their only losses have come against Big West Conference competition—a 4-3, 12-inning loss vs. UC Irvine on April 13 and a 13-10 loss vs. Cal State Fullerton on April 27.
The Titans, who are off until their weekend series with UC Riverside, had a nine-game winning streak snapped on April 2 with an 18-10 loss at Pacific. Cal State Fullerton had won seven consecutive conference games prior to that defeat.
Justin Shults (pictured) continues his quest to become the first member of the Highlanders to hit .400 in a season since Ryan Harvey accomplished the feat by hitting .411 during the 2003 campaign. UC Riverside has 17 games plus the final six innings of a suspended game against Loyola Marymount remaining on its schedule. Shults projects to get approximately 63 at bats over that span, and would need to collect at least 27 hits (.429 avg.) over that span to finish at or above .400.
