UC Riverside 16, Loyola Marymount 6 Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning and Tony Nix tied a program record with six hits as the Highlanders upended Loyola Marymount 16-6 Wednesday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Nix got things started in the bottom of the first with a lead-off double down the left field line and came around to score on Joey Gonzales's single up the middle. Michael Hur singled through the left side moving Gonzales to second, and Robert Brantly's single to right field loaded the bases. Justin Shults made it five straight hits with a single down the left field line that scored Hur and Gonzales which drew a visit from LMU pitching coach Drew Keehn.
Dan Pellegrino followed by laying down a sac bunt which third baseman Alex Guthrie couldn't handle scoring Shults and Brantly for a 5-0 UC Riverside lead. Eddie Young's single down the right field line scored Pellegrino, but Young was thrown out trying to stretch his base hit into a double.
After Bryan Horst lined out to right field, Trevor Hairgrove, Nix and Gonzales hit consecutive singles to give the Highlanders a 7-0 advantage,
That was all the runs the Highlanders would need as Trevor Frank allowed just three runs in six innings to pick up his third win of the season. Kevin Dickey gave up two earned runs in two innings of relief work, and Derek Speigner pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth.
The Highlanders weren't done scoring, however, as they plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth. By the time the bottom of the eighth rolled around, the only thing left to determine was if Nix would get a crack at becoming the first member of the Highlanders during the Division I era to record six hits in a game.
He was slated to bat fourth in the inning, and Pellegrino obliged him by beginning the frame with a single to left. Young followed with walk, and two batters later Nix laced a single through the left side for hit number six.
Nix wasn't the only UCR player to enjoy a banner day at the plate. Gonzales went four for five scoring three runs and driving in five while Shults went three for four with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hairgrove joined the three-hit brigade scoring three runs in the process.
