Box Score - Utah Valley 3, UC Riverside 0
Tempe, AZ - The UC Riverside volleyball team (0-7) began the ASU Sheraton Invitational on Friday morning with a 3-0 loss to Utah Valley (3-5) at Wells Fargo Arena. The Highlanders continue the tournament with a 5 pm match against High Point later this afternoon.
In the opening frame, both teams traded points in the early going until a 4-3 Highlanders lead quickly turned into an 8-4 deficit as the Wolverines rallied off five straight points.
Utah Valley pushed its lead out to 22-13, but UCR made a late push and outscored the Wolverines 7-3 to close out the set. It wasn't enough, however, as UVU maintained its lead throughout to win 25-20.
In the second, both teams were within a few points of each other until midway through the set when Utah Valley pulled away. Leading 18-16, the Wolverines scored three consecutive to push the lead out to 21-16 before the Highlanders could respond.
After cutting it to three, 21-18, UCR was held without a point to conclude the set as two attack errors, a service ace, and a kill gave Utah Valley a 25-18 win.
The third set started in similar fashion to the first. The Highlanders led 4-3, but the Wolverines scored five consecutive to take an 8-4 advantage. UCR got one back, but UVU rattled off six straight to open up a 14-5 margin.
Down 24-14 at match-point, the Highlanders used an Amanda Vialpando kill and two Wolverine errors to close the margin to 24-17. The rally was too late, however, as Utah Valley needed just one point to win the set and match, 25-17.
Kelly Simpson led UCR with seven kills while Vialpando (pictured right) added six. Megan Patterson led the team with seven digs and Chelsee Arnitz (pictured left) had five block assists to lead all players.
