Sun Devils Defeat Highlanders 3-0 To Conclude ASU Sheraton Invitational

Tempe, AZ - Coming off its first win of the 2010 season on Friday evening, the UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to make it two in a row on Saturday morning as they faced Arizona State, but fell in consecutive sets 25-21, 25-16, and 25-20 to conclude the ASU Sheraton Invitational at Wells Fargo Arena.
After a career-high performance with 16 kills the night before, Shelby LeDuff continued to lead the Highlanders (1-8) in that category as she recorded a team-high 11 kills while hitting for a .348 clip against the Sun Devils (4-6).
Both Savannah Thomas (pictured) and Kelly Simpson recorded career-highs in digs as they tallied 16 and 15 respectively to lead the team.
ASU took an early 10-6 lead in the first set, but the Highlanders went on a 4-1 one run to cut the margin to 11-10, capped off by a LeDuff kill.
The Sun Devils then scored six straight to go up 17-10, but UCR outscored ASU 10-3 to close the gap to 23-20.
A service error by Simpson gave Arizona State a 24-20 lead, but a LeDuff kill in the next possession made it 24-21 before ASU's Sarah Reaves closed out the set 25-21 with a kill.
The Highlanders opened the second set with four kills and took advantage of two ASU errors for a 6-0 lead. They maintained their margin leading at 11-6, but the Sun Devils rallied and got within one at 11-10.
Arizona State tied the set and 14 and again at 15 as they proceeded to outscore UC Riverside 10-1 down the stretch for a 25-16 victory.
In the third set, ASU led 18-12, but the Highlanders went on a 7-2 run to get with one at 20-19. The Sun Devils proved too much, however, as they limited UCR to just one point the rest of the way as they went on to win 25-20.
UC Riverside concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule at the Utah State Invitational on Sept. 17-18 in Logan, UT.
