9/22/2010 2:40:51 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (2-4-0) is coming off two tough loses to ranked opponents over the past two weeks sandwiched around a 1-0 victory over Biola. The Highlanders look to get back on the winning track on Friday, September 24 in a home match against Air Force (2-4-0).
Kick off is slated for 6 pm PT at the UCR Soccer Stadium, and fans who are unable to attend can follow the match via their computers or mobile devices via LiveStats.
Air Forice enters the match having lost three of its last four matches including two against ranked opponents—5-0 vs. #12 UC Irvine, and 2-0 vs. #23 Penn State. The Falcons won their most recent match in a 4-0 decision over Oral Roberts.
This is only the second meeting between these two clubs since the Highlanders made the transition to Division back in the 2001-02 season. The first came during that inagural Division I campaign in the form of a 1-0 Falcons victory on September 2, 2001.
GAME NOTES
TAKING OFFENSE
The Highlanders scored 22 goals during the 2008 season but managed just 12 a year ago. The team returns its top four point scorers from 2009, however, and already has 10 goals in 6 matches this season.
TAKING OFFENSE II
Alex Racca has 3 goals in 6 matches this year for the Highlanders which already matches the team individual high from a season ago.
LENDING A HELPING FOOT
UC Riverside’s Arnie Sanchez has 4 assists already on the year. The last time the Highlanders had a player record more than 4 assists in a single season was back in 2006 when Andrew Villalobos was credited with 5.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Six matches into the 2010 season, and the Highlanders have already doubled their win total from a year ago.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE II
Joel Garcia and Aaron Long each scored 2 goals in the Highlanders 5-0 win over Alabama A&M on September 4, tying the team record for individual goals in a match. It was the first time in the history of the program that two players had score multiple goals in a single match.
BONUS PLAY
The Highlanders have played 2 overtime matches so far this season, losing both by identical 2-1 scores. UC Riverside hasn’t won an overtime match since a 2-1 victory on November 12, 2005 at Cal State Fullerton—a span of 15 overtime contests (0-4-11).
CLOSE CALLS
The Highlanders lost 9 matches during the 2009 season by 1 goal, and 3 of their 4 losses this season are by just 1 goal.
