Martinez's Second-Half Goal Gives UCR 1-0 Win Over Air Force
9/24/2010 8:31:04 PM | Men's Soccer
UC Riverside 1, Air Force 0 - Box Score
Riverside--Jimmy Martinez took a cross from Tyler Wilson in the 60th minute of play Friday evening poking the ball past Air Force's goalkeeper to give the Highlanders a 1-0 win. The victory raises UC Riverside's record to 3-4-0 on the season while the Falcons fall to 2-5-0.
The Highlanders offense pressed from the outset coming out of the gates a bit too aggressively as they were called for four offside violations in the first 20 minutes of play. That limited UC Riverside's scoring chances in the early going, and the teams went into halftime tied at zero.
UCR kept up the intensity in the second period outshooting the Falcons 11-5 after the break. With 14:24 gone after intermission, the Highlanders finally broke through as Tyler Wilson crossed Joel Garcia's pass into the box and Martinez slotted it into the right side of the net to give UCR a 1-0 lead.
UC Riverside now has 11 goals on the season, just one shy of last year's season-long total of 12.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Sunday evening home match against Loyola Marymount beginning at 7 pm PT.
