Moraga, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team completed play at the San Jose State / Saint Mary's Tournament on Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss to Saint Mary's at McKean Pavilion, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-21. It was the second match of the day for the Highlanders (0-6), who played a neutral match against No. 14 ranked UCLA earlier in the morning.

After dropping the first two sets, the Highlanders found themselves down 20-11 in the third, but Courtney Wypiszynski (pictured) led a furious rally that included four service aces and three Gael attack errors to get the team within two, 20-18.

Both teams traded points over the next three possessions until St. Mary’s (4-2) scored the final three points to win the set and match 25-20.

In the first set, the Gaels took an early lead and steadily built it up throughout the set en route to their 25-14 victory.

The Highlanders led 4-2 in the second set, but SMC scored six consecutive to retake the lead at 8-4. UCR got within two points at four junctures midway through the set, but could get no closer as the Gaels won 25-16.

For the evening, Kelly Simpson led the Highlanders with 13 kills while Amanda Vialpando added nine.

UC Riverside returns to action at the ASU Sheraton Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11 in Tempe, AZ.
