UC Riverside Men's Basketball Struggles At UC Davis In 82-52 Loss
1/27/2011 7:23:39 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Davis 82, UC Riverside 52 Box Score
Davis, CA—UC Riverside's Phil Martin scored the first basket of the game for either team and tied the game at four with 1:51 gone in the first half, but UC Davis netted the next five points, 13 of the next 17, and 20 of the next 26, and the Highlanders were never able to get back into the game eventually falling to the Aggies 82-52.
Joe Harden scored 12 of the Aggies (7-12, 2-5) first 17 points, finishing the first half perfect from the field (4 for 4) and the free throw line (6 for 6). Two other UC Davis players were in double figures at the break: Mark Payne and Ryan Howley who each scored 10 points.
The Highlanders (7-11, 2-4) struggled from the field making just 33.3 percent of their shots in the first half, but they were equally snake-bit in the turnover department. After averaging 11.1 turnovers per game over their past seven contests, they recorded 11 miscues in the first stanza alone.
The Aggies 20-point lead at the half was their largest through the first 20 minutes of play, and they scored the first six points of the second period to go up by 26. UCR never got closer than 22 the rest of the way.
The Highlanders 19 turnovers on the night were their most since they committed 19 at SMU in the fourth game of the season, and their 31.7 percent shooting from the field on the night was the team's lowest since the season opening loss at UNLV.
Harden led all scorers with 22 points while Payne and Ryan Sypkens chipped in with 16 each for the Aggies. Javon Borum paced the Highlanders with 12 points extending his string of consecutive double-digit scoring efforts to 15, one shy of the program's Division I-era record.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend as they head to Pacific Saturday for a 7 pm PT tip with the Tigers.
