UCR Forces OT, Can't Complete Comeback In 83-77 Loss To Fullerton

Cal State Fullerton 83, UC Riverside 77 (OT) - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team made its television debut Saturday evening and nearly pulled off an improbable comeback on Fox Sports Prime Ticket, forcing overtime before falling to Cal State Fullerton 83-77.
The largest crowd of the year packed the Student Recreation Center as 1,466 UCR faithful came to cheer on the Highlanders and to celebrate the career of UC Riverside's first men's basketball coach, Frank Lindeburg. The Highlanders retired the jersey number 54, the first year of the program, in "Lindy's" honor in halftime ceremonies.
UCR had an eight-point lead at the break, 32-24, thanks in part to a 12-0 run midway through the period that turned a two-point deficit into a 10-point advantage at 21-11. Javon Borum scored 11 points for the Highlanders in the first 20 minutes of play to lead all scorers.
UC Riverside still led by eight, 43-35, with 13:18 to go in regulation, but the Titans began chipping away at the Highlanders lead moments later. Three consecutive layups by Andre Hardy, Orane Chin and Jer'Vaughn Johnson cut the UCR advantage to two, and Chin's three-pointer on the next Fullerton possession made it a one-point ballgame, 45-44.
A Devon Peltier three-pointer with 10:23 remaining tied the game at 47, and another Peltier long-ball gave the Titans their first lead since 12:11 to go in the first period. Cal State Fullerton wasn't done as they scored the next eight points to go up 58-49 with 5:52 left on the clock.
The Titans led by eight 69-61 with 2:13 to go in regulation, and by five, 73-68, with just six seconds to go. Borum drained a three-pointer with three second left, and Fullerton struggled to inbound the ball finally calling timeout. The only problem was that the Titans were out of timeouts.
As those of you who remember watching Chris Webber call a non-time out for the Michigan Wolverines many years ago, the penalty for that particular infraction is a two-shot technical. Borum calmly sank the two bonus shots sending the game into overtime.
In the extra stanza, Peltier knocked down a three on the Titans first possession and Fullerton never trailed again as the Highlanders missed their first six shots in overtime.
Borum led all scorers with 23 points and Martin added 17 for UC Riverside. Peltier's 21 points led five Titans in double figures followed by Isiah Umipig's 19 and Johnson's 17.
The Highlanders hit the road for the next two games as they travel to Cal State Northridge on Thursday, January 13 and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, January 15. Tip for both games is slated for 7 pm PT
