Andrea Morales' OT Goal Gives Women's Soccer 2-1 Road Win Over Cal Poly
10/13/2011 8:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
San Luis Obispo—Andrea Morales collected a Deborah Musa cross 10 feet off the Cal Poly goal line Thursday evening and slotted it past Mustangs keeper Brooke Gauvin to give the Highlanders a 2-1 overtime win. The victory improved UC Riverside's record to 7-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Big West play (Box Score)
The Highlanders haven't been over the .500 mark this late in a season since 2007 when they were 8-5-1 through 14 matches. It was also just the second win ever for UCR over the Mustangs in 11 opportunities.
Celina Valencia got the Highlanders on the board early as 3:25 into the match she took a pass from Alex Quincey nine yards out notching her second goal of the season and giving the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.
That score held up until late in the first half when the Mustangs' Cristina Pennington recorded her fourth goal of the season with 2:20 remaining before halftime.
Cal Poly (8-7-1, 2-3-0) outshot the Highlanders 11-6 in the second 45 minutes of play, but UCR goalie Sara Slaughter, making her second start of the season, was up to the task saving all four shots on goal in the period.
Morales made sure that the first shot of the first overtime period was the last one as her fourth goal of the season sent the Highlanders home happy.
UC Riverside remains on the road this weekend as they travel to UC Santa Barbara Saturday for a 5 pm PT tilt with the Gauchos (5-8-2, 0-4-0). A win over UCSB would put the Highlanders in the driver's seat for a Big West postseason berth with four matches remaining.
