Volleyball Hangs Tight In First Two Sets But Falls In Three At LBSU

Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team traveled to Long Beach State on Friday night looking to defeat the league-leading 49ers for the second time this season, but fell in straight sets 25-23, 25-23, and 25-16.
UCR (5-18, 2-7) hung close with the Beach (15-6, 9-2) in the first two sets, with 23 tie scores combined.
In set one, the teams traded points in the early going until the 49ers took an 18-14 lead. The Highlanders rallied back to tie the set at 18 and proceeded to go up 23-21 after kills from Annishia McKoy and Bianca Endersby, and a service ace from Kristin Van Dongen.
After a timeout, however, Long Beach State scored four consecutive points to walk away with the 25-23 victory. Tied at 23 late in the second set, the 49ers capitalized on the final two points and again came away with a 25-23 win.
In set three, the Highlanders fell behind midway through the set and could not rally back as Long Beach won 25-16 to complete the sweep.
Amanda Vialpando led UC Riverside with 10 kills and 14 digs while Shelby LeDuff added nine kills.
The Highlanders conclude their four-match road swing with a 7:00 pm match at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, October 29.
