13-4 UTEP Run To Close Game Sends Men's Hoops Home With 52-41 Loss
11/13/2011 1:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
El Paso, TX—A Kareem Nitoto fastbreak lay up cut the UTEP lead to 39-37, but the MIners closed the game on a 13-4 run to send the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team home on the wrong end of a 52-41 score Sunday afternoon. (Box Score)
The rims weren't kind in the early going for the Highlanders (1-1) as they missed their first nine shots on the day. Thankfully, their defense was causing nearly as many problems for the Miners (1-1) as El Paso started off connecting on just four of its first 16 shots.
UC Riverside finally got on the board thanks to a Phil Martin jumper with 13:15 to go in the first, which cut the UTEP lead to 4-2. The Highlanders secured their first lead of the game with 1:32 to go in the first period on a jumper in the lane by Nitoto which made it 14-13 UCR, but C.J. Cooper's jumper on UTEP's next possession put the Miners back on top. The Miners would go into the locker room at halftime with an 18-16 lead.
El Paso's Julian Washburn led all scorers at the break with eight points, while Elliott Berry and Nitoto shared top honors for the Highlanders with four points apiece.
Points were more plentiful for both teams in the second half, but the Highlanders still trailed 29-27 with 13:29 to go in the game. UTEP went on an 8-0 run over the next 3:20 to push their lead to 10, 37-27. The Miners started connecting from long range opening the second half by hitting all three of their shots from beyond the arc and finishing the final 20 minutes of play by hitting six of nine overall.
A BJ Shearry free throw cut the El Paso advantage to nine, 37-28, and a few possessions later, Nitoto's floater in the lane made it 39-32 UTEP. On UC Riverside's next possession, Harrison Gaines drained a three-ball to make it a four-point game, and after forcing a Miners' miss, Gaines found Nitoto for an easy fast break layup to bring the Highlanders to within two, 39-37.
Hooper Vint ended the UCR run with a three-pointer that bounced off the rim, off the backboard, and through the basket, and after a Highlanders miss, Vint drained another three, to push the Miners lead back out to nine, 46-37. A pair of free throws by Julian Washburn gave the Miners their largest lead of the ballgame, 48-37, with less than three minutes to play.
UTEP held UC Riverside's leading scorer from a year ago, Phil Martin, to just six points on the night, as Nitoto's 12 led the Highlanders and Berry added 11. Washburn led three Miners in double digits as Jacques Streeter added 12 and D'Von Campbell chipped in with 10.
The Highlanders are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Youngstown State (Youngstown, OH) for a Friday, November 18 meeting with the Penguins. Tip time is slated for 4 pm PT.
