Riverside—There's no rest for the weary as the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team, fresh off a road trip to El Paso, Texas, turns right back around and heads to Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio this Friday for a 4 pm PT tip against the Penguins.
A UCR win would put them at 2-1 for just the second time in the Division I history of the program. The 2008-09 squad went 4-1 to start the season before suffering its second loss of the year.
The Highlanders are coming off of a 52-41 loss at UTEP where they struggled offensively connecting on just 34.8 percent of their shots. Their 41 points scored are tied for the fifth fewest the team has produced in a single game since making the transition to Division I 10-plus years ago.
Youngstown State enters the weekend with a 2-0 mark following wins over Samford and Nore Dame College. The Penguins rely primarily on just six players and have four players scoring in double figures on the season led by Kendrick Perry’s 24.5 points per game. Perry is connecting at a 48.1 percent clip from the field including 7 of 12 from long distance. Damian Eargle is averaging close to a double-double with 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds while making 57.1 percent of his shots.
This is the second meeting between the Highlanders and Penguins as they first squared off against one another as part of the ESPN BracketBuster series on February 20, 2010.
The only player remaining on the UCR roster from that game is junior David Chavarria. The 6-7 forward was the hero of the night for the Highlanders against Youngstown State, as his put-back with just one second remaining on the clock provided UCR with its two-point margin in a 62-60 victory.
