Nitoto, Gaines Send Game Into OT, But UCR Falls, 66-62 To Boston College
11/25/2011 2:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Anaheim, CA—Kareem Nitoto and Harrison Gaines hit back-to-back three-pointers to send the game into overtime, but Boston College of the ACC outscored the Highlanders 10 to six in the extra period to pick up the 66-62 win Friday afternoon in the second game of the 76 Classic for both teams. (Box Score)
Ultimately what did in the Highlanders (1-4) was too much Patrick Heckmann. The 6-5 freshman scored a game-high 32 points including 21 after the break making nine of 13 shots from the field, four of five from long distance and 10 of 10 from the free throw line.
Still, it was UC Riverside protecting a seven-point lead, 39-32, following an 11-0 Highlanders run. Six players scored for UCR in the run which was capped off by a BJ Shearry fastbreak lay up.
After the teams traded free throws, the Eagles scored 9 of the next 11 points over a four minute and 15 seconds stretch to tie the game at 43.
UCR still led 48-45 following a Gaines jumper with 4:38 remaining, but BC scored the next nine points to lead by six. It was still a six points game with 55 seconds to go, but Nitoto and Gaines hit their back-to-back threes to send the game into the extra period.
The Eagles never trailed in overtime as they went two of four from the field and six of six from the charity stripe to eke out the win.
Phil Martin, who has been streaky offensively this season connecting on just 11 of 42 shots over his last three games, scored the Highlanders first six points of the afternoon on his way to a team-high 22. Gaines added 11, and Nitoto chipped in with 10.
The Eagles rely heavily on the three-pointer as an offensive weapon with 43.1 percent of their shots coming from long range entering the game. Friday was no different, as 22 of BC's 47 shots were from beyond the arc. The Highlanders were up to the task defensively, however, as the Eagles misfired on 16 of those 22 attempts.
UC Riverside made 39.3 percent of its shots from the field while Boston College connected on 40.4 percent. The difference in the game came down to free throws where the Eagles were 22 of 25 and the Highlanders were 16 of 18.
The final game of the 76 Classic for UC Riverside is slated for 10:30 am PT Sunday against the loser of this evening's New Mexico vs. Washington State.
