12/14/2011 9:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Phil Martin scored 25 points and UC Riverside's post duo of Kevin Bradshaw and BJ Shearry combined for 22 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday evening as the Highlanders men's basketball team cruzed (pun intended) to a 91-60 victory over visiting UC Santa Cruz. (Box Score)
The Banana Slugs jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but UCR scored the next 16 points and led by double digits the rest of the way. The Highlanders dominated the paint outscoring UCSC 30 to 10 in the lane during the first 20 minutes of action, and UC Riverside made 21 of 32 shots in the period.
Martin scored 12 of his game-high total in the first while Bradshaw and Shearry combined to go seven of 10 from the field for 15 points.
The Highlanders hot shooting cooled of in the second as Martin went 6 of 9 from the floor, but the rest of the team combined to shoot just 10 of 25. UC Santa Cruz might have kept it closer in the second half as they made 13 of 23 shots in the period, but the UCR defense forced them into 10 turnovers which they turned into 16 points.
The lopsided score allowed UC Riverside to give its starters some rest Wednesday as seven reserves saw action for the home team. Daymond Cowlah scored nine to lead the reserves.
The Highlanders are on the road for the next two games as they travel to Nevada for a Saturday, 3 pm PT tip with the Wolfpack, and then head to San Diego State for a Monday evening meeting with the Aztecs.
