Loyola Marymount 2, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Los Angeles—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (1-3) got an eight-inning, 10-strikeout, five-hit pitching performance out of starter Trevor Frank Sunday afternoon, but Loyola Marymount (3-1) sandwiched two singles around a walk in the ninth off of Highlanders closer Mitch Patito to come away with a 2-1 victory.
A day earlier, Patitio was perfect in his first appearance of the season as he retired LMU in order in the ninth inning of Saturday's 3-0 UCR win. On Sunday, he entered a 1-1 ballgame, and was quickly greeted by Matt Koch, who opened the ninth with a single through the left side of the infield. Matt Lowenstein sacrificed Koch to second, and Alex Guthrie drew a walk to put runners at first and second.
Patito then struck out Shon Roe for the second out of the inning, but Ryan Hawthorne put an end to any thoughts of extra innings as he laced a single to right center to end the game.
The Highlanders failed to score more than two runs in a game for the third time in four attempts against the Lions, scratching out just seven hits off of three Loyola Marymount pitchers. Three of those hits came in the top of the sixth as UCR evened the score at one.
Eddie Young started off the sixth with a single to right, and Ryan Goetz drew a one-out walk moving Young to second. Tony Nix followed with a single to center to score Young, and Justin Shults' single to short loaded the bases. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, catcher Dan Pellegrino grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
The Lions scored their lone run off of Frank in the bottom of the fifth as Hawthorne beat out a one-out infield single to third, and Nick Devian moved him to second on a single up the middle. A wild pitch moved both players up 90 feet, and a Zac Fujimoto ground out to third brought Hawthorne home with the first run of the day. Frank got Jonathan Johnson to line out to first to end the threat, and allowed just one more hit over his final three innings on the mound.
The three runs scored in the last of the four games between the clubs brought the series total to 17—a far cry from the 70 runs the teams combined to score in their four games from a year ago.
The Highlanders return home for a Tuesday meeting with USC at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
