Baseball Tries To Get Back On Winning Track Against USC Tuesday

UC Riverside vs. USC Game Notes
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team looks to bounce back from a 1-3 start to the season this Tuesday as they host USC in a 6 pm start at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Dustin Emmons (0-0, 0,00) will be on the mound for the Highlanders after pitching a scoress third of an inning in relief over the weekend. Ben Mount gets the start for the Trojans in his first appearance of the season.
Pitching was the name of the game for UC Riverside over the weekend as the team exited its four-game series with Loyola Marymount with an earned run average of 1.82. Unfortunately, the Lions were just a bit better as UCR scored just seven runs in the series. Last season, the teams combined for 70 runs in the four games between them compared to just 17 this season.
Only once in the Highlanders Division I history has the team scored fewer than seven runs in four consecutive games. That came during the 2005 campaign when UCR lost a 6-2 decision to UC Davis on March 26 and dropped three straight to No. 20 Long Beach State on April 1-3 by 6-1, 1-0 and 4-1 scores for a total of four runs.
Only two UC Riverside hitters carry .300 averages into Tuesday's game: Dan Pellegrino at .500 and Tony Nix at .400. The team as a whole is hitting .244/.315/.291 for the season.
USC took two of three games over the weekend at a four-team tournament which the Trojans hosted. On Saturday, February 19 they beat Missouri 9-3 and Cal Poly 5-2 in a rain-shortened five-inning game. On Sunday, they fell to North Carolina by an 11-7 score.
Seven members of the Trojans who got starts over the weekend are hitting better than .300 led by Kevin Round tree's .625. USC's batting line as a team is .357/.444/.459.
This is the first of two meetings this season between the clubs as the Highlanders travel to Dedeaux Field on May 3.
