UC Riverside 4, Sacramento State 3 - Box Score
Sacramento—Dan Pellegrino drove in three runs Sunday afternoon with a two-RBI single and a sac fly to help the Highlanders complete a three-game sweep of Sacramento State with a 4-3 victory. The win evens UC Riverside's record at 4-4 on the season while the Hornets fall to 2-5.
Justin Shults got things started for the Highlanders in the top of the second by lacing a one-out triple to center field off of Sac State starter Dallas Chadwick (0-1). Pellegrino drove Shults in with a sacrifice fly to right, and UCR had a 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Highlanders started Trevor Frank (1-0) didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth when Trevor Paine singled to left center. That put runners on the corners as Derrick Chung advanced to third having opened the inning with a base on balls. A 4-6 fielder's choice off the bat of Kirby Young scored Chung tying the game at one.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when the Highlanders banged out four hits and plated three runs. All of the scoring came with two outs as Shults singled to left center to score Eddie Young chasing Chadwick from the mound, and Pellegrino singled to the same spot off of reliever James Chamberlain scoring Nix and Shults.
Frank allowed just one hit in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh, but the latter was a two-out home run by David Del Grande. That made the score 4-3 UCR as Frank plunked Blake Miller prior to DelGrande's long ball.
In the eighth, Frank gave up a lead-off double to Andrew Ayers, and was lifted for Mark Garcia who retired all three Hornets he faced. Mitch Patito came in to close in the bottom of the ninth, and after issuing a two-out walk to Blake Miller, the sophomore got Del Grande to fly out to center to pick up the final out and his third save of the season.
The Highlanders return home this week to host San Diego on Tuesday, March 1, before heading to Surprise, Arizona over the weekend for four games at the Coca-Cola Classic. First pitch Tuesday is slated for 6 pm PT at the Riverside Sports Complex.
