UC Riverside vs. San Diego Game Notes
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team returns home Tuesday evening for a single game against San Diego before heading to Surprise, AZ over the weekend for a four-day tournament. First pitch Tuesday is slated for 6 pm PT, and fans who are unable to attend the game may listen live as the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, brings the call to gohighlanders.com via Stretch Internet's Game Central.
The Highlanders (4-4) return to UCR in a much better place than they were prior to heading north for a three-game set at Sacramento State. UC Riverside dropped four of its first four games of the season, but evened its record with a three-game sweep of the Hornets over the weekend.
The Highlanders pitching continues to be its strong suit in 2011 boasting a 2.23 earned run average through eight games. Were it to remain at that level throughout the season, it would be the lowest team ERA during the program's Division I era. UCR is also averaging 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings and just 2.4 walks. Opposing hitters are posting a batting line of .213 avg/.286 obp/.269 slg against the Highlanders.
Redshirt freshman David Andriese leads the Highlanders in the sabrmetric triple crown categories with a .462 batting average, .500 on base percentage and .654 slugging percentage for a 1.154 OPS.
The Toreros are 3-3 on the year with a pair of wins over crosstown rival San Diego State and solo victory against Winthrop. All three of the team's losses came against Vanderbilt. They bring an ERA of 3.42 into Tuesday's contest along with a batting line of .267/.324/.398.
