UC Riverside vs. Long Beach State Game Notes
Riverside, CA—It is the final week of the regular season for the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team, and even though they are currently in a tie with Cal State Fullerton for seventh place in the conference, a berth in the ampm Big West Basketball Tournament is not yet assured.
So here's how it all plays out in order for the Highlanders to secure a trip to Anaheim. Feel free to use this information to sound smart around the dinner table this week.
The simple version is as follows:
If the Highlanders win one of their final two games, UC Riverside is in.
If UC Davis loses one of their final two games, UC Riverside is in.
If Cal State Fullerton wins one of their final two games, UC Riverside is in.
The strange duck on the pond that prevents UC Riverside from making the tournament is a three way tie between those three clubs. If the Highlanders and Titans both lose their final two games and UC Davis wins both of their, all three teams will be tied with a 5-11 record.
The first tiebreaker is head-to-head results between the three teams. UC Davis would get the seventh seed by virtue of their 3-1 record (2-0 against Cal State Fullerton and 1-1 against UCR). The Highlanders and Titans would then go to a two-team tiebreaker.
Since the team's split their two games this season, the next tiebreaker rule looks at each team's record against the other teams in conference beginning at the top of the standings. Long Beach State has locked up the one seed, and Cal State Fullerton has a win against the 49ers this season, so they would get the eight seed over UCR.
Of course the simplest thing to do would be for the Highlanders to win at least one of their next two games. You can do your part by attending Wednesday's 8 pm PT tip against Long Beach State and Saturday's 7 pm tilt against UC Irvine.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, the Highlanders can still finish as high as sixth. UC Irvine is currently sitting in that spot with a 6-9 record. A Fullerton loss and a UCR win over the Anteaters would do the trick leaving all three of those teams tied at 6-10. UC Riverside would win the three-way tiebreaker by virtue of a 3-1 record against those clubs (2-0 against Irvine and 1-1 against the Titans).
