Long Beach State 82, UC Riverside 76 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team will have to wait at least another day to clinch a spot in the ampm Big West Conference Tournament following an 82-76 loss to Long Beach State Wednesday evening at the Student Recreation Center.
The Highlanders erased nearly all of a 19-point deficit thanks to a carer-high 23 points from Kareem Nitoto, but it wasn't enough as Greg Plater recorded his own career high with 24 points leading four members of the 49ers in double figures.
The loss drops UC Riverside to 5-10, a half game back of Cal State Fullerton for seventh place and a game and a half ahead of UC Davis who is currently in ninth.
The Titans travel to Pacific for a Thursday evening meeting with the Tigers, and a Fullerton would win would send the Highlanders to Anaheim. UC Davis hosts Cal State Northridge that same evening, and an Aggies loss also puts UC Riverside in the postseason.
TJ Robinson scored the first basket of the night, and the 49ers were off and running. Long Beach State jumped out to its first double-digit lead of the game at 17-7 with 6:19 gone in the first period, and led by 19 with 6:17 remaining in the half thanks in large part to a 7-of-13 shooting performance from three-point range, four of which were credited to Plater.
But the Highlanders started inching their way back in the ballgame going on a 14-4 run over the next four plus minutes to cut the lead to nine—the same lead the 49ers took into the locker room, 44-35.
Long Beach State scored 10 of the first 14 points in the second period to go back up by 15, but UCR answered the call once again climbing to within six points with 11:50 left on the clock, 58-52. A Kevin Bradshaw layup with 8:04 to go cut the 49ers advantage to five, and a pair of Phil Martin free throws cut it to three, 65-62, with 6:59 remaining.
Another Bradshaw layup with 5:38 to go made it a one-point game, 67-66, and LBSU still held a one-point advantage with 3:25 on the clock. But the 49ers made eight straight free throws down the stretch and never relinquished the lead.
Nitoto scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the second period making all six of his shots from the field. Bradshaw added 13 after intermission, while Ware made 12 of 13 free throws over the final 20 minutes of play to seal the win for the Beach.
The Highlanders final game of the regular season is slated for Saturday, March 5. Tip time at the Student Recreation Center is 7 pm PT.
