UC Riverside 73, Cal State Northridge 70 - Box Score
Riverside—Phil Martin scored a game-high 23 points and Javon Borum added 14 as UC Riverside snapped a four-game losing streak Thursday evening at the SRC upending second place Cal State Northridge 73-70.
The Highlanders (8-12. 3-5) were coming off of two difficult road losses over the weekend to UC Davis and Pacific dropping both games by a combined 57 points. However, the last time UCR faced off against the Matadors, the Highlanders ended a 12-game losing streak to CSUN in a 70-61 victory at the Matadome.
UC Riverside jumped out to an early eight-point lead, 20-12, with 6:28 gone in the first period behind seven points from Martin and five from Borum. The Matadors (8-14, 5-4) began whittling away at the UCR advantage, however, and with 9:00 remaining in the first half, a Josh Greene three-pointer gave CSUN a 24-22 lead.
That was the last lead of the period for Cal State Northridge as a Martin layup tied the score and back-to-back Borum triples put the Highlanders back on top for the remainder of the half. Martin and Borum each had 11 in the period, with Borum setting a UC Riverside Division I-era record by netting his 17th straight double-digit scoring effort.
Kareem Nitoto, who finished the game with 13 points, scored the first basket of the second half with 1:40 gone off the clock, but UCR went cold over the next five minutes as the Matadors went on a 12-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 49-43. Another Martin layup put an end to the run, and a Daymond Cowlah three ball made it a one-point game.
Neither team led by more than six points the rest of the way, and with 3:44 to go in the contest, Nitoto's layup gave the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish at 63-62. The Matadors had a shot to send the game into overtime, but Dathan Lyles' three-pointer with two seconds to go missed the mark, and UCR walked off the floor with a three-point win.
The win, coupled with losses by UC Irvine and UC Davis moved the Highlanders up to seventh place in the conference as they reached the half-way point in Big West play. They are just one and a half games back of CSUN, Cal Poly and Pacific, all of whom are tied with 5-4 marks.
UC Riverside heads back out on the road this weekend as they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 6 pm Saturday meeting with the Titans.
