Bradshaw's Dunk With Three Seconds Left Gives UCR 70-69 Win Over Titans
2/5/2011 5:48:47 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Riverside 70, Cal State Fullerton 69 - Box Score
Fullerton, CA—Phil Martin led all scorers with 26 points, but it was Kevin Bradshaw's two-handed power dunk with 3.8 seconds remaining that gave the Highlanders a 70-69 road win at Cal State Fullerton Saturday evening. (Watch The Dunk)
Bradshaw's dunk was the 20th lead change of the game and 12th in the second half as neither team led by more than four points over the final 11 minutes of action.
The Highlanders (9-12, 4-5) might not have been in a position to take that shot, let alone make it, were it not for Martin's play in the first half. He scored 20 points in the first 20 minutes including 11 straight at one point as the Highlanders took a 37-36 lead into the locker room at the break. That marked the 10th time in UC Riverside's Division I era that a member of the Highlanders scored 20 or more points in a single half.
Martin scored the first two points of the second half on a pair of free throws, but the Titans went on a 14-3 run shortly thereafter to take an eight-point lead with 13:19 to go. The Highlanders countered with a 10-0 run of their own, and the back and forth battle was on.
Devon Peltier gave the Titans (9-15, 5-6) their final lead of the night on a pair of free throws with 1:19 on the clock, and after a pair of turnovers, the Highlanders inbounded the ball in front of their bench with 16 seconds remaining.
Javon Borum found BJ Shearry on the right side, and a give and go put the ball back in Borum's hands driving baseline. Two Cal State Fullerton defenders collapsed on Borum, and the senior guard found Bradshaw wide open rolling to the basket.
The Titans had one last shot at the win, but Perry Webster slipped trying to bring the ball across the time line and the Highlanders went home with the one-point victory. It is the third Big West road win for UCR this season which ties the program record for conference road wins in a season.
UC Riverside returns home this week for a Thursday, February 10 meeting with UC Santa Barbara. Tip time is slated for 7 pm PT.
