UC Santa Barbara 59, UC Riverside 47 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos got 31 points from the Orlando Johnson and held the Highlanders scoreless for six minute and 48 seconds in the second half to come away with a 59-47 victory at the SRC Thursday evening. Javon Borum led UC Riverside with 14 points, recording his 18th consecutive double-digit scoring effort in the loss.
Phil Martin, coming off of a Big West Player of the Week performance, scored four of the Highlanders (9-13, 4-6) first eight points as UCR built an early 8-3 lead. UCSB (13-9, 6-5) responded by connecting on five straight unanswered threes, including three from Johnson, the conference's leading scorer, to go up 18-8 with 11:20 to go.
Eight minutes later, another Johnson three increased the Gauchos lead to 13 at 30-17, but the Highlanders scored 10 of the final 11 points of the period punctuated by Daymond Cowlah's three-pointer at the buzzer and trailed by just four heading into the locker room.
The teams traded baskets to open the second period, but the Highlanders went on a 6 minute and 48 second scoring drought immediately thereafter as the Gauchos pushed their lead back out to nine at 38-29. Kevin Bradshaw's free throw finally ended the scoreless streak, but UCR was never able to get closer than six the rest of the way.
UC Riverside remains in seventh place in the Big West as UC Irvine (3-7) and UC Davis (3-8) both lost Thursday evening. The Highlanders hit the road this Saturday for a 7 pm PT tip at Cal Poly.
