26-7 Second-Half Run Sends Highlanders To 56-40 Defeat At Cal Poly
2/12/2011 2:33:33 PM | Men's Basketball
Cal Poly 56, UC Riverside 40 - Box Score
San Luis Obispo—UC Riverside and Cal Poly played a back and forth game for the first 24 minutes Saturday evening, but the Mustangs went on a 26-7 run over a 13-minute stretch in the second period and came away with a 56-40 win.
For the second time in two games, the Highlanders struggled offensively in the second stanza. Against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, UCR went 5 of 27 in the final 20 minutes of play, and Saturday night they shot 7 of 18 from the field and turned the ball over 12 times.
Part of the reason for the offensive struggles was the absence of second-leading scorer Phil Martin who sat out the game with an ankle injury suffered in the team's win over Cal State Fullerton last Saturday. Martin logged just 15 minutes in Thursday's loss nursing the same injury.
Neither team shot well in the early going, but the Highlanders compounded their problems by committing five turnovers and seven fouls in the first eight minutes of play as the Mustangs built a 12-7 lead.
With the offense struggling, UC Riverside's defense clamped down tighter holding Cal Poly scoreless for nearly five minutes midway through the period to tie the game at 12, but Shawn Lewis' driving layup made it a 14-12 ballgame, and his three-pointer on the break pushed the lead back out to five.
The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, and the Mustangs took a 25-21 lead into the locker room. Will Donahue led all players with 12 points in the period while Javon Borum's nine paced the Highlanders.
Kevin Bradshaw scored the first two points of the second half to cut the lead to two, and it was still a three-point game with 17:27 to go after BJ Shearry's jumper, but the Highlanders went cold the rest of the way.
Lewis led all scorers with 17 points, and Donahue added 16. Borum reached double figures in scoring for the 20th straight game as he led UC Riverside with 16.
The Highlanders remain on the road this week as they travel to Long Beach State on Wednesday, February 16 for a 7 pm PT with the conference-leading 49ers. On Saturday, February 19, the team heads to Fresno State as part of the Sears BracketBusters series with tip slated for 7 pm.
