UC Riverside at Long Beach State Game Notes
Riverside—Despite losses in each of the past two games, the UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team is still in seventh place in the Big West and just a half game out of sixth as the regular season enters its final three weeks. The Highlanders have five conference games remaining including two against front-running Long Beach State beginning with a Wednesday road tilt against the 49ers at 7 pm PT.
Fans who are unable to attend the game can listen to the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, bring the call from courtside to gohighlanders.com via Stretch Internet's Game Central.
UCR also has games left against fourth-place Pacific (6-5), and single games against eighth place UC Irvine (4-8) and ninth place UC Davis (3-9).
The 49ers are 10-2 in league play having won four straight entering Wednesday’s game. Three of those four wins have been by double figures. All five of Long Beach State’s starters boast double-digit scoring averages led by Casper Ware’s 16.4 points per game. Ware led the team in scoring in each of the team’s games during it’s current winning streak, and is averaging 21.2 points per game over that stretch.
The Highlanders were without the services of second-leading scorer Phil Martin for the entire game in their recent loss at Cal Poly and for most of the game in their Thursday-night loss to UC Santa Barbara. The junior injured his ankle during UCR’s win at Cal State Fullerton on February 5.
Javon Borum continues to carry the scoring load for the Highlanders running his streak of consecutive double-digit scoring performances to 20 over the weekend with a 16-point effort against Cal Poly.
UCR has won three of the last four meetings with the 49ers, and the Highlanders 10 Division I-era victories over Long Beach State are their most against any team in the Big West.
