UC Riverside 4, Saint Mary's 3 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team picked up a split of the team's four-game weekend series with Saint Mary's with a 4-3 win Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex. Ryan Goetz's RBI ground out in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference maker.
For the first time in the series it was the Highlanders getting on the board first as Tony Nix opened the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on a bunt single by Trevor Hairgrove. Justin Shults lofted a fly ball down the left field line in foul territory which was caught for the first out by Justin Fazio, but Nix was able to score on the play. Hairgrove took second on the throw, and he came home after David Andriese singled through the right side.
The lead was shortlived, however, as the Gaels scored two of their own in the top of the second. Troy Channing and Danny Hayes reached on back-to-back singles to open the inning, and Chris Murphy sacrificed the pair up 90 feet. Toby DeMello flied out to center field scoring Channing, and Michael Gastelum tripled home Hayes to tie the game.
UC Riverside re-took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Bart Stepanovich got things started with a one-out single, and after Holinsworth advanced him to second on a chopper in front of the plate, Tony Nix brought him home with a single through the left side.
UC Riverside starter Dustin Emmons went five innings for the Highlanders and was lifted at the start of the sixth for Mike Wolford leading 3-2. Wolford pitched a scoreless sixth, but ran into trouble in the sevent giving up three consecutive one-out singles. The last one, off the bat of Brenden Kalfus, scored Donald Kalfus to tie the game at three. After Patrick Wisdom's fly ball to right moved Kalfus to third, Kevin Dickey came on to replace Wolford and got the final out of the inning on a grounder to second.
The Highlanders bounced back with a run in their half of the seven as Tony Nix reached on a hit by pitch, moved to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a Shults infield single, and came home on a Goetz ground out to second.
The Gaels went in order in the top of the eighth, but put runners on first and second with two outs against UCR closer Mitch Patito before the sophomore picked up the final out of the game on a fly ball to center.
Dickey (1-1) picked up the win for UC Riverside, while Patito was credited with his fourth save of the season.
The Highlanders host San Diego State on Tuesday, March 22 at the Riverside Sports Comp[lex. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
