UC Riverside vs. San Diego State Game Notes
Riverside—UC Riverside Baseball hosts San Diego State on Tuesday at 6 pm PT in the team's final game before the start of conference play the weekend of April 1-3. Fans who are unable to attend the game may listen live as the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, brings the cal from the Riverside Sports Complex to gohighlanders.com via Stretch Internet's Game Central. Fans may also follow the game live via live stats.
The Highlanders split their weekend series with Saint Mary's getting several great performances out of their pitching staff:
Matt Andriese posted his second straight double-digit strikeout performance on Friday, striking out 11 Gaels, but he found himself on the short end of a 2-0 decision as UC Riverside managed just four hits on the evening;
Trevor Frank struck out seven, walking none, and allowing just two earned runs in nine innings in game one of Saturday's double header, but he didn't factor in the decision as the Highlanders needed 10 innings to put away Saint Mary's;
Matt Larkins was saddled with his first loss of the season in game two Saturday despite striking out seven in 6.1 innings and allowing just two runs. UCR manged just seven hits off of two Gaels pitchers, and scored one run in a 2-1 defeat;
On Sunday, four Highlanders scattered 11 Saint Mary's hits, only two of which went for extra bases, as UC Riverside won the final game of the series 4-3.
But the team's offense, which appeared to awaken during its trip to Surprise, Arizona in early March, fell silent once again scoring just nine runs in the four games. The Highlanders are hitting just .232 over five games since departing Arizona with a .318 on base percentage and a .290 slugging percentage.
The Aztecs come into Tuesday's game with struggles of their own. They are just 5-15 on the season, although half of those games have come against ranked opponents.
San Diego State brings a batting line of 249 avg/.349 obp/.348 slg to the Riverside Sports Complex. Only four of the regulars in their line up are hitting better than .254.
The team's pitching staff owns a 5.78 earned run average and allows more than seven runs per game. They do have 149 strikeouts in 179.0 innings, but have been touched for 209 hits and 70 walks on the year.
