
UCR Baseball Wins Fifth In A Row With 5-3 Victory At San Diego State

San Diego, CA—Trevor Hairgrove and Ryan Goetz each banged out three hits while Dustin Emmons and Mike Wolford combined to allow just six hits as the Highlanders won their fifth straight with a 5-3 decision over San Diego State. The win improved UC Riverside's record to 20-14 on the year while the Aztecs fall to 12-29.
David Andriese helped the Highlanders to an early lead by opening the top of the second with a lead-off triple to left, and scoring on a Bryan Horst ground out to short.
The Aztecs tied it up in the bottom of the inning manufacturing a run on just one base hit thanks to some UCR miscues. Jomel Torres led off the inning with a single up the middle, and moved to second on a sac bunt by Tim Zier. After Chris Wilson popped up to right, Torres advanced to third on a balk and scored on an Emmons wild pitch.
The Highlanders regained the lead in the top of the third as Trevor Hairgrove extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a one-out double down the left field line, scoring on a Ryan Goetz single up the middle.
Emmons (4-2) retired the side in order in the bottom of the third, but in the fourth he allowed back-to-back one-out singles to Torres and Zier and a fielder's choice of of Wilson's bat tied the game at two.
It was still a 2-2 ballgame as the team's entered the eighth. San Diego State went to its bullpen to start the frame replacing Mitch Bluman, who allowed just four hits in seven innings, with Corey Black (2-4). Hairgrove was the first batter to face Black, and the senior shortstop greeted him with a solo shot to left field to put UCR back up by one.
Goetz then reached on an error, moved to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch. Tony Nix's single up the middle scored Goetz making it a 4-2 ball game, and ending Black's stint. Craig Rasmussen replaced Black, and although he allowed a single and a walk, he worked his way out of the jam by picking off Nix and getting Kyle Boudreau to ground out back to the mound.
The Highlanders also went to the bullpen in the eighth as Mike Wolford took over for Emmons, Emmons allowed just five hits in his seven innings of work walking one and striking out two. Wolford retired two of the first three batters he faced in the eighth, but Pat Colwell reached on a fielder's choice and came all the way around to score on a wild pitch, passed ball and wild pitch before Wolford recorded the third out.
Leading 4-3 in the ninth, UC Riverside tacked on an insurance run as Phil Holinsworth and Hairgrove hit back-to-back singles, and Goetz plated Holinsworth with an RBI single to left.
Wolford came out to start the ninth, and retired the side in order for his first save of the season.
The Highlanders return home this weekend and get back to conference play as they host UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
