UC Riverside vs. Cal Poly Game Notes
San Luis Obispo—Conference play gets underway this weekend for eight of the nine Big West baseball programs, and the Highlanders (10-9) first three-game series finds them on the road at Cal Poly (8-12). Matt Andriese (0-2, 3.56) gets the start in Friday's first game at Baggett Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:00 PT.
Fans who are unable to attend can listen to all the action on their computers and mobile devices as Ghizal Hasan brings the call to gohighlanders.com via Stretch Internet's Game Central. They can also follow the game on Cal Poly's GameTracker.
Other Big West Conference baseball series slated for this weekend feature Cal State Fullerton at UC Davis, Long Beach State at Pacific and Cal State Northridge at UC Irvine. UC Santa Barbara travels to San Jose State for the lone non-conference series of the weekend.
UC Riverside has played just five games since March 9, a span of 23 days between games. The Highlanders went 2-3 in those games and are 2-5 since rattling off a seven-game winning streak in late February and early March.
The UCR pitching staff has been as dominant as it has ever been during the program's Division I era boasting a 3.16 earned run average while striking out 8.0 batters and walking 2.6 per nine innings. The Highlanders previous benchmarks in those categories are 3.68 (2007), 8.0 (2007) and 2.4 (2009) respectively.
All three UC Riverside weekend starters have earned run averages well under 4.00 with Saturday starter Matt Larkins at 3.04 and Sunday hurler Trevor Frank at 2.70.
The Highlanders bats have been a different story, as they are averaging 5.0 runs per contest and have scored just 15 runs over the past seven games. In 15 of 19 games in 2011, UC Riverside has scored four or fewer runs.
The Mustangs were picked to finish fourth in the Big West in the preseason coaches poll, but they have dropped four of their last five games and six of nine since a five-game winning streak in early March. The team's offense has struggled, averaging 4.8 runs per game. Only three Cal Poly regulars—Mike Miller (.457), Bobby Crocker (.342) and JJ Thompson (.302) are hitting north of .275 on the season.
The team's pitching is improved from a year ago posting an earned run average of 4.18 compared to 6.75 in 2010. Mason Radeke (1-1, 3.60) gets the call on Friday night while Steven Fischback (1-1, 6.05) and Chase Johnson (0-1, 2.08) take their turns on the hill Saturday and Sunday respectively.
