UC Riverside vs. Pacific Game Notes
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team is coming off of its most dramatic victory of the year after erasing a three-run deficit Tuesday evening against 16th ranked UCLA en route to a 5-4, 11-inning win over the Bruins.
The Highlanders carry the emotion of that win into this weekend's three-game Big West series against the Pacific Tigers. Friday's game is slated to begin at 6 pm PT, and fans who are unable to attend may listen live as the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, brings the call to gohighlanders.com via Strecth Internet's Game Central.
Matt Andriese (0-3) gets the start for UCR still searching for his first win of the 2011 campaign despite boasting an earned run average of 3.68. The junior right hander has allowed three earned runs or less in five of six starts this season including two games in which he didn't allow a single earned run. Andriese is also averaging nearly a strikeout per inning.
The Tigers were picked to finish seventh in the conference this year in the preseason coaches poll, and although they are 9-16 on the season, they are coming off of a 7-4 upset win over 13th ranked Cal on Tuesday afternoon.
Pacific began conference play last weekend by dropping its first two games against Long Beach State including a 20-0 drubbing in game one. They bounced back on Sunday, however, with a 5-4 win over the Beach, and are currently tied with the Highlanders for fifth place in the Big West.
The Tigers have struggled with the bats in 2011 as have many teams due to the NCAA's mandated alterations, but their pitching has been their Achilles heal as they enter the weekend with a 5.68 earned run average. Only one of their starters, Jame Hummel, boasts an earned run average below 6.00 at 2.60. He also has has been credited with three of the team's nine wins on the year.
