San Diego 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team traveled down the I15 to San Diego Tuesday afternoon trying to get back on the winning track following a three-game sweep over the weekend at the hands of tenth-ranked Cal State Fullerton. Unfortunately, the Highlanders offense was stymied by three Toreros pitchers who limited UCR's bats to three hits in a 4-1 loss.
It was a "staff day" on the mound for UC Riverside with Dustin Emmons picking up the start in search of his team-leading sixth win of the season. But the Toreros put Dillon Checkal on with one out in the bottom of the first, advanced him to second on an Emmons error, and brought him home when Zack Kometani singled up the middle to make it 1-0 San Diego.
Emmons allowed just one hit over his next two innings giving way to Dylan Stuart in the fourth. Stuart threw a scoreless fourth, and Gavin Mills pitched a three-up-three-down inning in the fifth.
The Highlanders tied the game in the top of the sixth as Tervor Hairgrove opened the frame with a double to center ending Toreros starter Paul Sewald's (3-3) evening and bringing Max MacNabb out of the bullpen. Ryan Goetz laid down a sac bunt that moved Hairgrove to third, and one batter later, Hairgrove came streaking home on a wild pitch.
The game didn't stay tied for long, however, as Kometani started off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to center field off of Joie Dunyon (0-1). Kevin Dickey took to the hill in the bottom of the seventh walking lead-off man Kevin Muno. One out later, Muno stole second, and a Kris Bryant single through the left side of the infield put runners at the corners. Kometani then hit a grounder to second that Bryan Horst couldn't handle, and Muno came home on the miscue.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mike Wolford gave up a one-out single to Scott Schauer who eventually came around to score thanks to a stolen base, a ground out and a passed ball which made it 4-1 Toreros.
Meanwhile, McNabb kept the Highlanders at bay going two-and-two-thirds innings without allowing a hit. James Pazos came on with two outs in the eighth and retired Goetz with a runner on first, but he ran into some difficulty in the top of the ninth.
After the first two outs of the inning were recorded, David Andriese reached on an error by shortstop Julian Duran. Horst drew a walk, and Vince Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of Bart Steponovich, but he struck out to end the game.
The Highlanders remain on the road this week traveling to Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West Conference series beginning Friday at 3 pm PT.
