UC Riverside 10, USC 6 - Box Score
Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team got back in the win column Tuesday evening with a 10-6 win at USC. The victory comes two days after the Highlanders seven-game winning streak was snapped in a 9-5 loss to UC Santa Barbara. The win also avenged an early-season, 6-3 loss to those same Trojans back on February 22.
Ryan Goetz got the Highlanders (23-15) on the board with a one-out solo shot to right field off of Kyle Richter (2-2) in the top of the first. However, USC (18-26) tied the game up in the bottom of the inning as UCR starter Dustin Emmons (5-2) was touched for two singles and a walk.
Bryan Horst put UC Riverside back on top in the second when he connected on a one-out homer of his own, this one sailing over the left field wall.
It remained 2-1, UCR, until the top of the fifth. Trevor Hairgrove singled to short to lead off the inning, and one out later, Justin Shults singled through the right side sending Hairgrove to second. A wild pitch moved both base runners up 90 feet, and after Tony Nix walked to load the bases, David Andriese lifted a sacrifice fly to left to put the Highlanders up 3-1.
Emmons didn't allow a base hit in the second through fifth innings, but USC put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth as Alex Sherrod's single to right plated Rickey Oropesa to cut the lead in half.
Hairgrove continued his recent hitting spree in the top of the seventh leading off the frame with a double to left. Goetz followed with a walk, and after a Shults ground out put runners at second and third, Trojans relief pitcher Ben Mount uncorked a wild pitch scoring Hairgrove and moving Goetz to third.
Nix tripled to right scoring Goetz to make it 5-2, UCR, and Andriese picked up his second sac fly of the evening to give the Highlanders a 6-2 advantage.
The Trojans scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth thanks to three singles, a walk, a hit batter, a passed ball and a sac fly. That brought Mark Garcia out of the bullpen, and he struck out Sherrod with runners on first and second to end the threat.
UC Riverside blew the game open in the top of the eighth as the first three batters reached base via a single (Young), hit by pitch (Bart Steponovich) and a single (Holinsworth). Hairgrove plated two with a double to right, and one out later, Shults' single to center gave UCR its tenth run of the game.
The Highlanders return home this weekend to host tenth-ranked Cal State Fullerton in a three-game Big West Conference series beginning Friday, May 6 at 6 pm PT.
