Diaz Pizarro's Helps Men's Soccer To 2-1 Win Over Jacksonville
9/25/2011 5:33:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Jacksonville, FL—For just the second time in the program's 10-plus year history, the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team finds itself three games over .500. A 2-1 road win over Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon improved the Highlanders to 5-2-1 on the season tying them with the 2004 squad which began the year 4-1-0. (Box Score)
Joe O'Connor's (San Diego, CA) sliding shot off of an Otis Earle (London) cross in the 35th minute of play put UC Riverside up 1-0, but that lead was shortlived as a UCR foul in the box just over a minute later gave the Dolphins a penalty kick opportunity. Stefan Durr beat Cody Suppé (Chino, CA) on the subsequent kick knotting the match at one apiece.
The Highlanders outshot Jacksonville 9-3 in the period, but were unable to dent the back of the net the rest of the period.
With 26:35 gone in the second, Richie Osborne (San Jose, CA) found Cesar Diaz Pizzaro on a breakaway. Diaz Pizzaro faked Dolphins keeper Johnny Foley out of the box and beat him to the left side of the goal for his team-leading fourth score of the season.
It was also the Chino, CA senior's 15th career score which moves him into sole possession of second place on UC Riverside's career charts, seven back of Luc Harrington '04 and one ahead of Joel Crompton '08. In addition, Diaz Pizzaro is now one behind Harrington on the Highlanders career game-winning goals chart with six.
UCR's five wins are the most they have ever recorded prior to the start of conference play, which begins this Wednesday, September 28 with a home match against No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at 7 pm PT. The 2003 squad was 4-4-0 in eight non-conference matches.
The Highlanders are just two wins away from tying the program mark for wins in a season set by the 2003 team and matched by the 2004 version.
