Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team weathered a late Cal Poly storm as they held on Saturday evening for a 60-53 win over the visiting Mustangs. The win improves UCR's record to 4-1 in conference which is the best record the Highlanders have ever had through five games of Big West competition. (Box Score)
UC Riverside expected a low scoring affair as the Mustangs came into the game ranked 10th in the nation in opponent scoring average at 55.7 points per game. But the Highlanders brought some defensive intensity to the floor as well, holding Cal Poly to 34.0 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from long distance.
UCR led by five at the break, and it was still a five point ball game at 30-25 with 18:04 to go, but the Highlanders scored 14 of the next 18 points over a seven-minute stretch to push their advantage to 15. Five different Highlanders scored during the run led by Robert Smith's six. The Mustangs missed seven shots during the streak and committed three turnovers.
Maliik Love's jumper with 10:21 to go ended the run, and started Cal Poly on an 14-2 run of their own as they climbed to within three, 46-43, with 4:17 to go. Kevin Bradshaw ended the Mustangs run with a reverse layup with 3:55 remaining.
The teams traded scores over the next two minutes as UCR still led by three, 51-48, with 1:32 on the clock. But Bradshaw drained a jumper, and the Highlanders made six free throws down the stretch to hold on to the victory.
Martin's streak of consecutive 20+ point games came to an end, but he still paced the Highlanders with 13 points. Bradshaw added 11 for UCR.
Amaurys Fermin led three Mustangs in double figures with 13 points followed by Chris Eversley's 11 and David Hanson's 10.
The Highlanders have just one game next week as they travel to Cal State Fullerton Wednesday evening, January 18. Tip is slated for 7:05 pm.
