Riverside—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team heads north this week for its first two road conference games of the season: Thursday, January 5 at UC Davis, and Saturday, January 7 at Pacific.
The Highlanders are coming off of a 63-52 defeat at the hands of Cal State Northridge. UC Riverside never led in the game, and trailed by as many as 20 points as the Matadors connected on 11 of 21 three-pointers on the night while holding UCR to 38.5 percent shooting from the field.
Phil Martin led all scorers with 22 points, and he continues to be the Highlanders leading scorer (15.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.4 rpg)
UC Davis enters Thursday’s game with a 1-12 overall record including 0-1 in the Big West. The Aggies have lost nine straight including a 65-64 defeat at the hands of Cal State Fullerton in their conference opener.
UCD is without the services of their leading scorer, Ryan Sypkens (14.5 ppg), who was sidelined with an injury after the fourth game of the season. Josh Ritchart (12.2) is the lone active member of the Aggies scoring in double figures.
UC Davis has struggled defensively this season allowing 75.9 points per game on 47.5 shooting from the field and 37.1 percent from three-point range. The Aggies have also taken 87 fewer free throws than their opponents on the season, and are being out rebounded by 7.7 boards per game.
The Highlanders are 27-26 all-time vs. the Aggies. The teams split their meetings a year ago as UCR withstood Eddie Miller’s 35-point effort in an 85-81 home win on February 26, 2011. Kevin Bradshaw scored a career-high 23 points in the win, and BJ Shearry added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
