UC Riverside 60, UC Davis 58 - Box Score
Davis, CA—Phil Martin scored a game-high 24 points and the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team Survived a late second-half scare as the Highlanders held on for a 60-58 road win over UC Davis Thursday evening.
UC Riverside (7-8, 1-1) led by as many as 10 points in both halves, but a Josh Ritchart lay up with 3:50 to go put the Aggies up by four, 58-54. It was the last points UC Davis (1-13, 0-2) would score as BJ Shearry, Robert Smith and Martin all scored on layups to close out the game and the win.
The Aggies had one final chance to tie or win the game, as they inbounded the ball with 6.3 seconds left. The Highlanders had a foul to give, and Martin grabbed the back of Eddie Miler's jersey, but the officials didn't make the call, and Miller continued unabated to the basket. Elliott Berry stepped into the lane, however, drawing the charge, and saving the day for UC Riverside.
The Highlanders scored the first nine points of the game before the Aggies got on the board courtesy of a pair of Miller free throws. Shearry scored four points in the opening run while Kareem Nitoto added three and Kevin Bradshaw added a deuce.
Berry gave UC Riverside its first double digit lead with a baseline jumper that made it 15-5 Highlanders with 13:38 to go in the first period. Unfortunately, that was the last bucket UC Riverside would score for the next three minutes and 15 seconds as the UC Davis press had its desired impact on the UCR offense.
Shearry ended the drought with a jumper extending the Highlanders advantage to six, 17-11, but UCD scored eight of the next nine points to take their first lead of the game, 19-18. Tyrell Corbin's free throw put the Aggies up by two with 7:31 to go in the half.
A pair of Martin free throws tied the game at 20, and that's when the lid went on both baskets. It was still 20-20 with just under four minutes to go when Corbin's jumper from just inside the key broke the tie. Martin tied the game again on UCR's next possession with a jumper, and Shearry's steal and two-handed dunk put the Highlanders back on top, 24-22, and they took a 27-25 lead in the locker room at halftime..
The Aggies scored the first five points coming out of the break, to lead 30-27 with 18:40 to play, but the Highlanders brought something extra with them over the next four minutes as they ran off 11 straight points to tie their biggest lead of the game at 10, 40-30. Martin scored seven points in the run.
UC Davis started chipping away at the UCR lead again, tying the game at 50 following Ritchart's jumper with 7:47 remaining. Miller put the Aggies back on top with a free throw with 7:12 on the clock, and his put back on UCD's next possession gave them a three-point edge, 53-50.
Austin Quick's lay up cut the Aggies advantage to one, but Ryan Howley connected on UC Davis's sixth three-pointer of the half to give them their largest lead of the game, 56-52.
The teams traded baskets before the Highlanders closed out the game on a 6-0 run, and Berry made the biggest defensive play of the year to secure the win.
UC Riverside remains on the road this Saturday as they head to Pacific for a Saturday, 7 pm tip against the Tigers.
