UCR made a push with CSF at set-point, 24-16, using two consecutive Vialpando kills to put a scare into the the opposition, but it wasn't enough as a Highlanders error gave the Titans the 25-18 win.
In the second set, UC Riverside turned a 3-3 tie into a 6-4 advantage, capped off by two straight White kills. UCR pushed its lead out to 14-8, and still led 17-11 midway through.
Cal State Fullerton slowly built a comeback, and eventually closed to two points on three occasions late in the set, the last at set-point for UCR, 24-22. A Titans attack error, though, proved to be the deciding point as the Highlanders tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 victory.
The Highlanders were down 3-1 early in set three, but rallied to take a 4-3 lead following a Cox kill and two White kills. CSF made a run of its own, scoring four consecutive to go back up 7-4.
The Titans lead grew to 13-7, but three kills and a service ace for the Highlanders closed the gap to 13-11. Cal State Fullerton then converted four straight points to open a 17-11 margin, and went on for the 25-19 win.
In set four, CSF turned a 4-4 tie into a 7-4 lead, but the Highlanders closed to 8-7 following Vialpando and Cox kills. Cal State Fullerton then scored three straight, and opened a 20-14 lead.
It looked as if CSF would cruise to the victory, but UC Riverside surged, closing to just one, 20-19, thanks in part to three Cox kills. After trading points, the Titans scored three straight to lead at set-point, 24-20. UCR got two points back, but it wasn't enough as the rally fell just short as a Highlanders error made it 25-22.
October is breast cancer awareness month, and the Highlanders did their part by hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness game during Saturday's match. Prior to the game, UCR volleyball alum and breast cancer survivor Sandra Houston was presented with a signed ball and participated in an honory serve.
Next up for the Highlanders is a 7:00 pm PT match against Long Beach State on Thursday, October 11 at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
