Chicago, IL—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team remains in the Windy City to take on the UIC Flames on Sunday at 11 am PT.
The Highlanders opened the 2012-13 season at DePaul where they hung tough with the Blue Demons until a 12-0 run midway through the second put the game out of reach.
Josh Fox and Austin Quick combined to score 32 of UC Riverside’s 59 points making 10 of 17 shots from the floor. The Highlanders were bitten by the turnover bug, however, committing 24 miscues compared to just 13 for the Blue Demons. DePaul turned that discrepancy into a 37-7 advantage in points off of turnovers.
This is the season opener for the Flames who topped UW-Platteville, 56-49, in their lone exhibition game. Daniel Barnes and leading returning score Gary Talton combined to score 39 points on 14 of 22 shooting from the floor for UIC in the victory. The Flames’ top reserve is Joey Miller, who is also UC Riverside Assistant Coach Mike Miller’s son. The younger Miller scored six points and grabbed four rebounds in 24 minutes in UIC’s exhibition game.
The Flames went 8-22 last year including a 3-15 mark in the Horizon League, but the additions of Division I transfers Josh Crittle (Oregon, Central Florida) and Miller (Eastern Illinois) along with incoming freshmen Matt Gorski and Jake Wiegand caused USA Today to recognize UIC’s recruiting class as the “Head Of The Class” in the conference.
