Men's Basketball Can't Overcome Early Flames Run As Highlanders Fall 59-52
11/11/2012 1:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Chicago, IL—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team was looking for a split out of its season opening weekend in Chicago, but a 14-0 UIC run early in the first half gave the Flames a lead they would never relinquish as the Highlanders fell 59-52 (Box Score).
Chris Patton scored on the Highlanders (0-2) opening possession, but UCR turned the ball over three times and missed six shots over its next nine trips down the floor as the Flames built an early 14-2 lead. Hayden Humes led the early UIC attack going four for four from the field with two three-pointers during the opening run.
Davin Guinn's free throw with 12:57 to go in the first stopped the run, and Robert Smith's layup on the Highlanders subsequent possession cut the Flames (1-0) lead to single digits.
The teams traded baskets for much of the remainder of the half, with UIC taking a 30-25 lead into the break thanks in large part to a 6 of 12 shooting performance from beyond the arc. Josh Fox, Patton and Austin Quick each had six points for the Highlanders heading into intermission.
Unfortunately, the beginning of the second half looked much like the first as the Flames scored 10 of the first 12 points. UIC was still up ten, 48-38, with 11:03 to go in the game, but the Highlanders scored six straight points cutting the advantage to four.
Several possessions later, a Guinn jumper made it a 50-47 ballgame with just over four minutes remaining. The teams traded three pointers over their next two scoring possessions, but the Flames sandwiched a pair of Gary Talton free throws and a Daniel Barnes' three pointer around a missed UCR shot to push their lead back out to eight with less than a minute to go.
Patton drew a foul and hit two free throws to make it a 58-52 game, but that was as close as UC Riverside would come as Talton made one of two from the charity stripe, and the Highlanders couldn't score on their final possession of the game.
Fox finished with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for UC Riverside, while Patton added 10 points and Guinn scored nine. Josh Crittle led all scorers with 15 for the Flames. He was joined in double figures by Joey Miller (14), Humes (10) and Talton (10).
The Highlanders return to Riverside this week for their home opener Wednesday against Fresno State. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
