Riverside—The UC Riverside and Fresno State Men's Basketball Teams engaged in an epic defensive battle Wednesday evening, but a a 14-0 run midway through the second half helped the Bulldogs to a 39-30 win over the Highlanders (Box Score).
The score at the half was 13-11 with both teams combining to go 8 of 39 from the field while committing 21 turnovers. Chris Patton had three of UCRs four made field goals to lead all scorers at the break with six points while Kevin Foster had two of the 'Dogs' four field goals to lead Fresno State with four points.
The start of the second half brought much of the same defensive intensity as the Highlanders led 23-18 with 13:31 remaining, but that is when the Bulldogs took control scoring 14 straight points over the next nine minutes
Patton ended the run with a lay up at the 4:04 mark, and his bucket with 3:!2 remaining cut the Fresno State lead to five at 32-27.
After Allen Huddleston missed a three-pointer, the Highlanders (0-3) committed a turnover, and after another Huddleston misfire, UCR missed a free throw and three subsequent shots over the next minute. Huddleston finally connected on a three ball with 1:00 to go to push the Bulldogs out to eight, effectively ending the game.
Huddleston led all scorers with 17 points, 16 of which came after the break. Patton led the Highlanders with 12 points and nine boards. The 30 points scored by UC Riverside were the second fewest ever scored by a Highlanders men's basketball team behind only the 29 points at Redlands on December 8, 1956.
UC Riverside remains at home this weekend as they host Whitman College on Saturday at 1 pm PT.
