Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team returns to the Inland Empire this week for the team's home opener Wednesday against Fresno State beginning at 7 pm PT. The Highlanders then host Whitman College on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.
The Highlanders lost their first two games of the season on the road last weekend hanging tough with DePaul before falling to the Blue Demons on Friday night, and nearly pulling off a 13-point come-from-behind victory over UIC on Sunday.
Freshman Josh Fox recorded a pair of double digit scoring performances for UC Riverside to open the 2012-13 campaign becoming the first member of the Highlanders to turn that trick as a freshman since Nate Carter started his UCR career with 15 straight double-digit scoring performances. Fox also added 10 rebounds in the game against UIC becoming the fastest member of the Highlanders to record a double-double in the Division I history of the program.
Austin Quick also sports a double-digit scoring average early in the season for UC Riverside at 11.0 points per game. He is the Highlanders leading long-range shooter connecting at a 45.5 percent clip (5 of 11).
Fresno State opened the season on the road at No. 24 Texas where they nearly pulled off the upset of the Longhorns before falling 55-53. The Bulldogs led by as many as five early in the second half, and the game was still tied at 48 with 2:14 on the clock, but Texas got six free throws from Sheldon McClellan and one from Jonathan Holmes down the stretch to close out the win. Marvelle Harris led Fresno State with 11 points while Allen Huddleson and Tyler Johnson added nine apiece.
The Highlanders are 0-4 all-time against the 'Dogs most recently in a 68-49 loss on February 19, 2011. Phil Martin scred 13 points and Javon Borum added 11 for UC Riverside in the loss.
Whitman College, a Division III member of the Northwest Conference, opens its 2012-13 season this Thursday with a home game against St. Thomas. Last season, the Missionaries went 18-8 overall, behind 20.0 points per game from David Michaels. Michaels graduated last season, though, leaving junior Josh Duckworth as the team's leading returning scorer at 8.0 points per game. The Highlanders and Missionaries have never faced off against one another in the regular season.
